O Immortal, Omnipresent and Omniscient God, grant unto us the wonderful wealth of enlightenment. Bring to your devotees divine virtues created by spiritual wisdom. May you dispel gloom of ignorance by appearing in our hearts, just as darkness of night recedes at the advent of dawn.

In India, in the late 1800’s Vedic morality and our rich heritage of ethical excellence were in a spiraling decline.  The impingement of foreign intervention had plundered social values creating a stranglehold on society.  Hypocrisy, ignorance and oppression were rocketing skywards.  Religion was succumbing to the onslaught of pervasive intolerability.  Corruption and injustice reign in a sacrilege chasm of ugliness and despair. The dark abyss of an eroding culture stood like a gigantic cloud engulfing Bharat within its harrowing darkness.

Emanating from its sinister confines there emerged an illuminating dynamo – a man of vision, deep insight and unbowed tenacity.  This visionary genius, scientist and revolutionary commander is no other than our own – Swami Dayanand Saraswati – a giant among men. Like divine radiance permeating Bharat’s grandeur, Swamiji rose to the forefront determined to smash the veil of illiteracy once and for all.  He championed the cause of the disillusioned, the poor and the oppressed by re-activating the doctrine of Vedic teachings.  He pounced at the gullibility of the ‘masses’ by evoking practical evidence to demonstrate that the Vedas offers the solution to man’s every day problems – social, cultural, ethical and political.

In 1875, he established the Arya Samaj with the clarion call of “BACK TO THE VEDAS”. Swamiji motto “KRINVANTO VISHWAM ARYAM-MAKE THE UNIVERSE NOBLE” envisioned a perfect world for all mankind in which an advanced civilization would prosper and flourish.  He darted courageously with magnanimity, vigor and zeal thus re-energizing wisdom, truth and Dharma among the noble and impoverished alike.  He and the Arya Samaj single-handedly plucked Vedic Dharma from the brink of annihilation and restored it triumphantly into a ‘life nourishing nectar’ for everyone all over the world to enjoy.  Maharishi Dayanand and the Arya Samaj brought credibility and a re-awakening of faith, selflessness knowledge back to us in the form of logic and scientific technology.  Scholars, intellectuals and philosophers from different nationalities were attracted by his shrewd proliferation of sacrosanct Vedas.

The mission of the Arya Samaj as established by Maharishi Swami Dayanand with ten principles serves as an ideal example of the ancient Vedic way of life. The first five principles set the framework for the goal of one’s life, and remind us of our obeisance to God, who, through the Vedas bestowed upon us the wisdom, and truthfulness to obey the Laws of Righteousness (Dharma).  The last five principles establish the universal values that everyone craves.  Education and knowledge helps to dispel ignorance and bring about love and justice in one’s daily dealings with their fellow human beings the entire universe.

The New Jersey Vedic Society was established in 1997 by former members of New Jersey Arya Samaj Mandir, Inc.  The founding members of the New Jersey Vedic Society established the first Arya Samaj congregation at St. Paul's Avenue, Jersey City in 1982. The New Jersey Vedic Society was established with a commitment to the principles and ideals of the Arya Samaj founded by Maharishi Swami Dayanand 126 years ago. The New Jersey Vedic Society is committed to the teachings of the Vedas and we encourage every individual to be an active, involved participant in our service.  Among other things, our most important achieved goal at this time is that every man, woman and child is able to conduct his or her own Havan and Sandhya, as Swami Dayanand envisioned in his teachings.  We encourage every child and adult to understand the great wisdom of the ancient Vedas so they can be proud of their Hindu culture.

At the New Jersey Vedic Society, members are made aware of the first and second principles of the Arya Samaj that primarily focus their devotion, acceptance, glorification, and ultimately their realization of AUM, the supreme creator of the universe.  It is an established fact  that Moksha or Self Realization of the soul is achieved through the Science of Yoga as established in the Vedas as outlined in the Yoga Sutras of Maharishi Patanjali.  We encourage all our members to establish their daily lives in the eight limbs of yoga – Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, dharana, Dhayan and Samadhi.  Having set out in the first two principles of the Arya Samaj that the ultimate goal of everyone’s life is moksha or self-realization of the soul. The third principle re-establishes the backbone of ancient Hindu culture that the Vedas is the scripture of all true knowledge and imposes a direct responsibility on everyone to read, teach, hear and recite the ancient wisdom of the Vedas. Members of this organization are constantly inspired by the mantras from the Vedas and from the ARYABIVINYA a compilation of 108 Vedic mantras by our revered Maharishi Swami Dayanand for our peace and enlightenment.

We motivate our members and youths with the inspiration from the Atharva Veda 13-1-34 and Yajur Veda 17-72: AoËm  i.dv. c roh p<i4vI. c roh ra*¨. c roh ³iv`. c roh | p/ja. c roham<t. c r.oh roihten tNv.É s. Sp<xSv ˜ Atharva Veda 13-1-34 .  AUM divan cha roha prithiveen cha roha raashtran cha roha draviran cha roha |  Prajaan cha rohaa mritan cha roha rohiten tanvan san sprishasva ||

Implores all men to realize that the objective in life is not to pause, but to stop and put an end to this type of injustice.  It is to continue, to struggle, to strive, to seek and soar to loftier glory and grandeur. The Vedas infuses a spirit of ceaseless endeavours and efforts into man and encourage him to arise and ascend and not to stop until the loftiest pinnacle of your goal is reached.

‘Aum supanoahsee gurutamaanam prishte pritivayaah seeda, baasaanatarishamanprina jothtisha deevamuttabhaana tegasaa deesha a udadriganha”

O Aryan you should fling away any feelings of inferiority, consider yourself as indispensable, essential and an important entity possessing great power which can exercise tremendous influence on earth and sky.

The youths of the New Jersey Vedic Society is given the most unique opportunity in our mandir. They are allowed to conduct Sandhya and Havan services, participate in weekly pravachans, play musical instruments, sing bajans etc. We provide an atmosphere that is conducive to promote their involvement and consequently their awareness of the Vedic Dharma serves them well in their activities in the USA. The experience and the development that we provide to our youths and members serves to ensure that the Mission of the Arya Samaj will never fail. It is important that all Arya Samaj organizations recognize that the potential energy of our youths will be the manifestation of the strength of the Arya Samaj organizations of the future. The New Jersey Vedic Society will like to encourage all Arya Samaj organizations on this 126 Anniversary of Arya Samaj Foundation to implement a program where the youths will be involved. In our organization, we can declare with pride that if all our adult members should leave our organization the youths of this organization is capable to carry out the mission of the Arya Samaj.

We will repeat Lala Hansraj Rai’s statement on Hinduism :   “ Over the milleniums of time Hinduism has survived. Hinduism has created the Arya Samaj. Hinduism has the vitality enough to save itself by other means, if the Arya Samaj should fail; but the death of the Arya Samaj would be an everlasting shame to those on whom the mantle of Maha Rishi Swami Dayanand has fallen. ’’

We will be doing the Arya Samaj - our great organization and ourselves a disservice if we fail to grab on to the “lighted torch” which Swamiji had eagerly left for us.  Once in our grasp, let us indulge ourselves in its power of revivification today, tomorrow – forever.  It is this cosmic life force which will one day take us to the Absolute- divinity- God and true bliss.
